Why we started Exeter Hair Loss Clinic. We got tired of watching people buy the wrong thing.
Most people worry about their hair for months before they search for help. By then, many have tried special shampoos, hair gummies and whatever oil Instagram recommended, and some have been told it’s probably stress. What often gets missed is the most important question - what’s actually causing it?
That’s where we start. Our assessment is built to find the cause, because different types of hair loss need different next steps. Shedding usually means finding the trigger, and sometimes a blood test. Pattern hair loss responds best to treatment started early. Patchy hair loss or a sore scalp needs a GP. We’ll point you to the right option, even when that isn’t us.
What we do. Find the cause. Know your next step.
A free hair loss assessment
Answer a few quick questions about what you’ve noticed, when it started and what was happening in your life in the months before. The assessment checks for the most common causes in one go - female pattern hair loss, male pattern baldness, shedding (telogen effluvium) and scalp problems. It also looks for signs that need a doctor. You’ll see your result as soon as you finish.
One clear next step
Every result tells you exactly what to do next. For pattern hair loss, that’s a consultation with a prescribing clinician to check whether treatment is right for you. For shedding, it’s usually an iron and thyroid blood test, through your GP or a home test kit, or simply giving it time, because most shedding settles on its own. For patchy, sore or scarring hair loss, it’s your GP, with a list of questions to ask. If we’re not the right answer, we’ll tell you.
Treatment through a registered pharmacy
If treatment might suit you, you’ll complete a full consultation with The Independent Pharmacy, which is registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. A UK registered prescribing clinician reviews your medical history before anything is prescribed, and can suggest an alternative or decline. Our assessment alone is never enough for a prescription.
Expert reviewed hair loss guides
Our plain-English guides cover the causes of hair loss, the tests worth having and the treatments that work. That includes an independent guide to hair transplants, which we don’t perform ourselves. Every guide names who wrote it and who reviewed it, and is checked again at least once a year.
How we’re different. Our promises to you.
A lot of the hair loss industry profits from worry. We’d rather help you find the cause.
We will
- Find the most likely cause before we talk about treatment.
- Tell you when a blood test, your GP or simply waiting is the better option.
- Be clear about what each treatment does, as well as what it doesn’t do.
We won’t
- Push conditioners, supplements, or gummies, or claim they’ll regrow your hair.
- Call ourselves a trichology clinic or offer hair transplants, because we’re neither.
- Treat a 2 minute assessment as a diagnosis.
Is this the right place?. When Exeter Hair Loss Clinic can help
- Adults aged 18 and over living in Exeter and the wider Devon area.
- Women who’ve noticed a widening parting, a thinner ponytail or more hair in the brush, and want to know whether it’s pattern loss, shedding, or something else.
- Men whose hairline or crown has changed against an old photo and who want to act before there’s less hair to keep.
- Anyone whose hair started falling out in handfuls a few months after an illness, a baby, a diet or a stressful patch, and wants to know whether to wait or to test.
- People weighing up a hair transplant who want honest answers before they book a consultation anywhere.
Clinically reviewed, every time. Real experts, named on every guide.
Every guide on this site shows who wrote it and who reviewed it. Our hair loss content is written by either a registered trichologist or GPhC-registered pharmacist, and we check every guide again at least once a year.

How Exeter Hair Loss Clinic works. No waiting room. No scalp camera. All from home.
We’re proud to serve patients in Exeter, but you don’t need to come to us. For the most common types of hair loss you don’t need an examination. Pattern hair loss can often be recognised from where your hair is thinning, how quickly, and whether it runs in your family. Shedding is identified from the timeline. And only a blood test can tell you whether your iron is low. The assessment is online and takes two minutes. If a blood test would help, we’ll point you to your GP or a home test kit. If treatment might suit you, a clinician at our partner pharmacy, The Independent Pharmacy, reviews your consultation before anything is prescribed. If your scalp needs to be seen in person, we’ll tell you and send you to your GP. It works the same whether you’re checking your parting in a bathroom in St Leonard's or a hallway mirror in Topsham.
